The Montana Coal Council is a nonprofit industry association whose membership includes all major coal mine operators, holders of Montana coal reserves, those who ship the coal, utilities who use the coal, and numerous suppliers and businesses directly and indirectly involved in the coal industry.

Presently, there are six major coal mines in Montana - five mining subbituminous coal and one mining lignite coal. The subbituminous coal mines are located in Big Horn, Rosebud, and Musselshell counties. They are:
- Decker Coal Co. at Decker, MT
- Spring Creek Coal Co. at Decker, MT
- Western Energy Co. at Colstrip, MT
- Bull Mountain Mine at Roundup, MT
- Westmoreland Resources at Hardin, MT
The lignite mine is Westmoreland Savage Corp. at Savage, Montana, in Richland County on the Montana-North Dakota border.
